From the Heart to the Mouth
Emotional Discipline
Matthew 12:36 states:
[36]But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
The power of the tongue cannot be overstated. Words carry immense influence, and scripture urges us to exercise caution with what we say.
Proverbs 13:3 advises:
“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.”
When anger arises, the Bible provides guidance in Ephesians 4:26: “Be angry and do not sin.” In all circumstances, refrain from allowing corrupt speech to escape your lips.
Proverbs 17:27-28 teaches:
[27] He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. [28] Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
The words a person speaks reveal the true state of their heart. If someone is filled with anger, their speech will be marked by curses, quarrels, and discord. A joyful heart, however, overflows with words of goodness. A person consumed by lust will often talk of impurity, while a gossip will constantly discuss matters that do not concern them.
The words we speak are a direct reflection of our inner selves. The mouth reveals the condition of the heart.
Psalm 141:3 petitions:
“Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
Words possess the power to build up or tear down in an instant. Therefore, it is crucial to think before speaking. The children of God are those who learn to govern their emotions and guard their words, ensuring they align with righteousness.
As Matthew 12:37 warns:
“For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Choose your words wisely at all times so that they don't turn against you, for they hold eternal significance.
